I still cannot get over how 2004 is the year for UK gospel projects to be released all at an extremely high and consistent standard.
Here we have an absolute treasure-find of a project by a collective of singers known as The Company. Chris Brooks aka ‘Baby Brooks’ is the overseer and instigator of this album and there’s no holding back. Straight off “No Matter” is a definite lead single with its R&B club banger beat, catchy female vocals and rap/rock outtro. The list goes on for those that like their urban club beats: “Better Day” featuring rapper Costa Rica, “Can I Get A…” with its stop-start flow and the retro-vibe on “Heavenly Places”.
On the more neo-soul tip the interlude “If You Woz Thinking” will hit the mark with all followers of ‘credible’ music steering away from the commercial sound heard else where.
Slow jams pop-up - “I’m Tired” and the harmony-driven “Donna Karen”. On the more gospel edge you are simply drawn into the intimate ballad “Here Comes Jesus” which has some great live-instrumentation, the heart-stopping “Mr Invisible” and there’s “Now That I’ve Found You” running on a minimalist edge.
Without a doubt Chris Brooks’ music industry expertise has had a big part to play in the calibre of sounds heard thanks to his production works with the likes of Mary J Blige, P Diddy, Ginuwine, Ms Dynamite, etc. The polished contemporary sounds can easily rival many of the cheap-sounding Top 40 songs hitting UK radio. What appeals about the album as a whole, is the diversity and the well-thought positioning of the songs making this a memorable musical journey from beginning to end. Oh, and did I mention about the packaging - simply brilliant!
